Ever since I played the first one as a little kid on our NES years ago, I’ve been a huge fan of the Zelda series. I can remember making a map of level 9 with our Dad. It was on several sheets of graph paper, huge, and as detailed as anything you would have seen in Nintendo Power. Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64 may be the single greatest video game ever created. I’ve played through A Link to the Past several times, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some good Zelda news at this years E3.
Having said all of that, Zelda II: The Adventures of Link is my least favorite. Maybe I’m biased against side-scrolling in my Zelda games, or maybe I didn’t like the combat or the need to jump. Maybe I didn’t like the knight things in the dungeons that blocked your sword thrusts with their shield and had a longer reach than you did. Or maybe I just didn’t like it because it was really freaking hard. One thing that I never thought was how much better it would be if it were a First Person Shooter.
This guy apparently did. He’s created everything up through the first boss as a 3d shooter. It’s impressive, but it’s still freaking hard.
In retrospect, I think it was the knight guys. I hated those things.
I remember wanting to play Zelda at your house, but I couldn’t because the game only had 3 save files and you, your dad, and Matt had them filled up.
We were serious about our Zelda.
I remember that map too. Does your dad still play any games,? He could probably get through three or four levels on zelda while waiting for his dial-up internet to load his boy’s blogs. 🙂
No, I haven’t played much since Zelda. The only game I’ve spent any time with since then was Myst. That concept was so different from anything else I’d tried, it was fascinating to me. I still miss “Ladybug” from our Colecovision.
