Today was my second time to celebrate Father’s Day as an actual father, and sometimes I still find it kind of hard to believe but in a wonderful kind of way. I know for some out there this was the first. I don’t know if you read this, Sam, but congrats again. Some, like Smokey, are celebrating being a father two times over for the first time, and some, like my brother, three times over. Hope you all had a great Father’s day.
My card from my son had a picture of an old Atari joystick and a Playstation controller on the front and read “Great Dad. Great Times”. The inside said “Driving racecars, rescuing princesses, or fending off zombie hordes… Time spent with you is the best.” My wife and son know me well. We played Mario on the Wii this afternoon and he sat next time waving the second controller and cheering.
I would write a post on what it means to be a father, but I don’t really feel qualified. I just stumbled into it, and now I continue stumbling trying to do the best I can while I worry about his future and love him in the present. Sometimes I suspect that may be the big secret. I do know this, being a father is truly something to celebrate when you have a boy as precious as mine.
If you need a translator, he’s singing ‘Jesus Loves Me’.
Also, this was meant to be posted on Father’s Day, but if you notice the time is past midnight so technically I missed it. In my defense, when the wife saw me working to get the video for the post uploaded, she discovered all of Gabe’s videos from when he was a newborn, and I just now got the computer back.
